The collaboration between the City of Denver and Denver Public Schools through a joint committee has its roots tracing back to 1938.
However, in recent years, the regular meetings have been neglected, and today, three mayors and two city councilmembers convened to urge its reinstatement.
The following week, Denver Councilwoman Amanda Sandoval will present a proposal to reinstate the City-School Coordinating Committee.
Sandoval stated that the committee’s reinstatement is merely rectifying an oversight and should have never been allowed to expire. He emphasized that the committee serves as a formal and ongoing platform for collaboration between the two entities.
“We are faced with numerous challenges within our city,” expressed Former Denver Mayor Federico Peña. “Should we fail to unite our schools and the city, our fate is sealed.”
Mayor Mike Johnston was joined by Peña and former Mayor Wellington Webb in endorsing the reinstatement of the joint city-schools committee.
According to Webb, the inspiration for implementing school resource officers during his time in office originated from the students at George Washington High School. The joint committee then collaborated to transform this idea into a reality. Additionally, other collaborative endeavors between the committee and the city included securing funds from a city bond measure to support the construction of playgrounds for DPS.
The upcoming election in the following month will play a crucial role in determining the future direction of Denver Public schools.
Michelle Griego invites you to join her and our partners for the DPS School Board debate, airing tonight at 7PM on CBS News Colorado.
The debate brings attention to all three available DPS seats, emphasizing their significance.
The group Educate Denver hosted the press conference saying that DPS is broken and candidates for the school board should pledge to support a platform focusing on four areas.
