In light of a recent incident in Castle Rock where a patrol car was struck, the Colorado State Patrol officials are urging drivers to familiarize themselves with the state’s “Move Over Law” applicable to authorized and emergency vehicles.
On Thursday, CSP Castle Rock tweeted to confirm the crash and assured that no injuries were reported.
This is a best case scenario when you fail to #MoveOver for vehicles with flashing lights: nobody hurt, this time. But it could have been so much worse. It’s not just courtesy, it’s the law. pic.twitter.com/3zxJS4E5L1

According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, Governor Jared Polis enacted HB23-1123 earlier this year. The new law mandates that drivers must change lanes when they come across any stationary vehicle on a highway with its hazards flashing. In cases where changing lanes is not possible, drivers are required to reduce their speed to a minimum of 20 mph below the designated speed limit.
As of August 7, the state has reinforced its Move Over law, aimed at providing increased safety measures for individuals and their vehicles on the roadside. Drivers are now obligated to move over when passing disabled vehicles on the side of the road.
