Santos expressed in Spanish that they were experiencing a mix of happiness and sadness because he would have been present.
This is the first time being back on the field since his son, 16-year-old Luis Garcia, was fatally shot while sitting in his car just outside the Denver high school back in February.
Santos expressed that they were currently experiencing a challenging transition.
Luis and his wife were surrounded by numerous family members and friends as they sat amongst the East High School soccer community. A ceremony was held to honor Luis and his life, at the beginning of the team’s game against the Far Northeast Warriors.

Kirk Bast, Head Varsity Soccer Coach for East High, acknowledged that every member of the team needs to put in extra effort to compensate for the absence of Luis. He praised Luis as one of the most dedicated athletes the team has ever had.
This would have been Luis’ senior year on the soccer team.

Bast expressed the importance of ensuring his family understands that he will always be remembered.
During the ceremony, players on both teams each gave out a flower to his mother and father, while close teammates spoke about the impact Luis had on them.

Clayton Thomas, one of Luis’ teammates, mentioned, “Without fail, he would consistently be among the last two individuals to depart during training sessions every day.” Reflecting on this, Thomas expressed his desire, saying, “If only I could have those additional 15 minutes at the conclusion of practice, just once more.”
In addition, his parents were bestowed a No. 11 jersey, elegantly framed, symbolizing their son’s soccer number. Adjacent to it, a photograph and plaque were displayed, commemorating the enduring legacy left behind by Luis.

Jose Najeia, one of Luis’ teammates, emphasized the importance of remembering Luis’ name, particularly for the new kids and freshmen who never had the chance to meet him. He believed that everyone should be aware of who Luis was and how profoundly he impacted the entire team.
Luis’s family is deeply grateful for the unwavering support from his coaches, as well as the ongoing support from the rest of the East High community. Words cannot adequately convey their appreciation.
Santos expressed his sincere gratitude for the school and the East community, acknowledging the support they have provided.
“Hardest working kid,” said Bast.
As there were only 11 minutes remaining in the game, the entire field erupted in applause for a full minute. This gesture served as a poignant tribute to the enduring legacy of his presence, both within the East High community and on the soccer field that he once considered his home.
We continue to progress. Though our son may not be present in a tangible way, he remains with us in spirit.
Instead of discussing the ongoing investigation and their desire for justice, the family chose to prioritize the support they received from the community. It is important to note that, at present, no charges have been filed in relation to the tragic passing of Luis Garcia.
