Dr. Marielena DeSanctis, a proud Latina woman, has held the esteemed position of President at the Community College of Denver for the past three years.
She expressed, “Being in this role is an immense honor and a tremendous responsibility. What has truly amazed me is the number of women who approach me and confide, ‘I never believed I could aim for a higher position, a promotion, or even a college presidency.’ The first few times this occurred, I couldn’t help but question, ‘Are you referring to me?'”
DeSanctis possesses humility and her journey started from humble origins.

During an interview with CBS News Colorado’s Mekialaya White, she shared, “My mother immigrated from Cuba to the US in 1961, leaving her mother behind. On my mother’s side, I am the first generation to be born here.”
From an early age, she never overlooked the significance of that sacrifice. She harbored grand aspirations. “When I expressed my desire to become an engineer, they responded, ‘That’s not possible. Girls can’t be engineers.'”
However, she indeed did. Fast forward 23 years, and this engineer has now become the president.
Having experienced both private and K-12 education, as well as higher education, while simultaneously raising children, there are moments when I reflect and wonder how I ended up here. However, it is evident that my journey has been paved with immense dedication, hard work, and unwavering determination. My purpose is to advocate for those who lack a voice and offer hope to those who have lost it.
