Illinois wagering numbers were expected to decline in April after a record-breaking month in March, but the figures turned out to be surprisingly strong.
The decline can be attributed to several factors, including:
- The absence of NFL games to bet on.
- The lack of Chicago teams in the NBA and NHL playoffs.
- The NCAA basketball tournaments’ Final Four and championship games being played in April.
However, the strong betting activity during the men’s and women’s March Madness tournaments is believed to have contributed to March becoming the best month for Illinois wagering.
The latest figures released by the Illinois Gaming Board show that Illinois sports betting sites had total bets of just under $900 million in April. While this is a 16% decrease from March’s record total of over $1.072 billion, April’s numbers still represent a 7% increase compared to the approximately $839 million wagered in April 2022.
Despite the significant drop from March, the April figures indicate continued growth in the Illinois betting market.
