Kate, the Princess of Wales, was hospitalized for planned abdominal surgery, Kensington Palace said in a statement Wednesday. She is expected to remain in the hospital for another ten to 14 days.
The statement does not specify what the surgery was for, but says Kate “hopes the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private.”
It says that Kate apologizes for having to postpone her upcoming engagements.
The “surgery was successful,” Kensington Palace said, but “based on the current medical advice,” the Princess of Wales is “unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter.”
The statement said that Kate “looks forward to reinstating as many (engagements) as possible, as soon as possible.”
