EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones will not play Sunday night against the Buffalo Bills because of a neck injury.
Coach Brian Daboll declared Jones, left tackle Andrew Thomas, rookie center John Michael Schmitz, outside linebacker Azeez Ojulari, and backup tackle Matt Peart as unavailable for the game.
“Daboll stated on Friday that, in his opinion, Jones is making progress but still falls short of the required level to participate in the upcoming game. Jones has faced a total of 28 sacks this season.”
Tyrod Taylor, a seasoned backup who played three seasons with the Bills, is set to make his first start for New York since late 2021 when he was with Houston. As for the backup position, Tommy DeVito, an undrafted free agent from Illinois, is likely to be promoted from the practice squad or signed to the roster.
According to Daboll, Tyrod is a true professional. He consistently approaches the backup situation with the same dedication and mindset as if he were the starter. Throughout the week, he has consistently prepared well and had a good performance, as he does every week.
The Giants, who have allowed the most sacks in the league with a total of 30, have grown more concerned about their offensive line in the past couple of days due to an ankle injury suffered by right tackle Evan Neal. Although Neal, the seventh overall pick in the previous year’s draft, participated in limited practice on Thursday, he did not practice on Friday. As a result, his availability for the upcoming game remains uncertain, as he has been listed as questionable.

If Neal is unable to join Thomas and Peart, it would result in Josh Ezeudu being the sole healthy tackle on the active roster. Jaylon Thomas and Yodny Cajuste, who are tackles, are currently on the practice squad alongside Justin Pugh, an offensive lineman who has experience playing tackle but has been sidelined since injuring his knee last year. In the event that another player is placed on injured reserve, Thomas, Cajuste, or Pugh could be elevated for the game or signed to the roster.
Saquon Barkley, the star running back, has been on the verge of making a comeback for the past two weeks after spraining his ankle on Sept. 17. However, his status remained uncertain, as he was listed as questionable.
Daboll said Jones, who signed a four-year, $160 million contract earlier this year, was in the Giants headquarters. He was hurt in the fourth quarter Sunday when he was sacked on a blind-side hit by Miami Dolphins edge rusher Andrew Van Ginkel. He immediately left the game and Taylor played the final 12 minutes in the 31-16 loss, New York’s third straight.

Jones will not be playing in his first regular-season game since he sat out the last six games of the 2021 senior season due to a neck injury. Despite being the sixth overall pick in 2019, Jones clarified that his current injuries are different from the previous ones.
Jones has completed 104 out of 151 passes, accumulating 884 yards, two touchdowns, and six interceptions. Additionally, he has rushed for 197 yards and scored one touchdown.
