FREEPORT, N.Y. — An immigrant from Ukraine who arrived here less than a month ago has already made a mark on a Long Island community. He was honored Thursday for saving a life after a car plunged into a canal in September.
Volodymyr Zubko, a local hero, comes from a completely different world.
He fled the war in his native country, arriving just four days before finding himself on the front line of a different kind of crisis outside of his Freeport rental house.
Zubko mentioned, “While I was busy working at my computer, I glanced out the window and noticed a car submerged in the water.”

A car plunged into a canal on September 19, swiftly flipping over and rapidly descending underwater.
Zubko stated that amidst the distressing cries for help, no one dared to plunge into the water. Without a moment to ponder, he swiftly removed his t-shirt and courageously leaped into the marina to rescue the person in need.
He saved him, indeed. In a matter of seconds, the police, fire, and rescue teams swiftly arrived at the scene to discover the brave civilian hero in the canal, courageously extracting the unconscious driver by his legs.
According to Freeport Fire Chief Ray McGuire, amidst a crowd of bystanders pointing in astonishment, he bravely plunged into the situation and single-handedly made a significant impact.
When Zubko arrived in this country, he initially claimed to have no friends. However, his situation rapidly transformed.
Zubko expressed gratitude, saying, “I truly appreciate it when people greet one another on the road or in the market. Thank you very much.”
He received an abundance of awards and accolades for his heroic actions.
State Sen. Kevin Thomas expressed his gratitude, repeating “Thank you” three times. He acknowledged the individual as a true hero.
Town of Hempstead Clerk Kate Murray stated, “Being a country of immigrants, you automatically become a role model, and I want to express that you have had a significant impact in our community.”
Zubko has also received job offers.
A police official encouraged individuals who may not find success in their computer-related careers to visit them, as a Nassau County Police test is scheduled to take place soon.
McGuire also mentioned that we are in the process of obtaining an application for the fire department for him.
The modest hero claimed that his actions were simply a result of being in the “right place at the right time, almost like karma.”
The driver who was rescued is currently in the hospital, as he consumed a significant amount of saltwater. However, his life was saved thanks to the courageous act of a man who leaped into action and earned the admiration of the entire community.
Thomas announced his intention to nominate Zubko for the New York State Liberty Award, an accolade that recognizes acts of civilian heroism.
