SYOSSET, N.Y. – A Long Island community is rallying around a young Israeli soldier born and raised in Planview.
His parents last heard from 21-year-old Omer Neutra just before a surprise attack on a small military base where he lived.
The sign displayed at his Syosset synagogue states, “Omer’s homecoming is requested.”
Neutra is missing, and feared abducted by Hamas terrorists in Israel.
Rabbi Joel Levenson of Midway Jewish Center expressed our strong support for Omer, a local resident who was raised in our community and had his bar mitzvah ceremony here.
Levenson’s emotions overflowed at the Midway Jewish Center, where police were stationed to protect the numerous donations that were being delivered, surpassing any count that could be made.
Levenson stated that a young man, who will be turning 22 this week, is being held captive by Hamas.
Messages are being sent by Neutra’s heartbroken parents.
Orna Neutra, his mother, reassured, “Omer, we are aware that you are alive and well. Stay strong.”
“Omer’s father, Ronen Neutra, described him as an individual filled with immense passion. He has a lively and fun-loving personality, and holds a deep love for sports, particularly the Knicks.”
Omer, a standout student both academically and athletically at Schecter Yeshiva in Williston Park, chose to embark on a gap year in Israel after completing his studies. This experience allowed him to strengthen his connection to his family heritage. Eventually, Omer made the decision to continue his stay in Israel and enlist in the Israeli military.
He is receiving support from his entire community.
Syosset High School senior, Cooper Smith, expressed his disbelief, stating that it is simply unimaginable for a child just a few years older than himself to be abducted and subjected to such a dreadful ordeal.
Julia Chaitin, a peace activist and native New Yorker, is currently in Israel, close to the Gaza border where it is suspected that Omer was abducted.
Chaitin stated that these individuals are religious extremists aiming to cause harm and instill fear, and he firmly believes that our response to them should be a resounding “no.”
Nassau Legislator Josh Lafazan proposed a bill aimed at strengthening economic relations to support Israel.
“Lafazan stated that the initial legislative proposal, which would have a tangible effect on Israel and bolster their war efforts,”
There seems to be no end in sight to this ongoing war.
Orna Neutra urged the Hamas leaders to treat Omer and all the hostages with humanity.
Prayers were made to ensure their safe release.
