NEW YORK — Staten Island officials are calling on the city to close a center for asylum seekers, which they say is facing a vacate order because of violations.
Lawmakers said an FDNY inspection in August found the St. John Villa site was unsuitable for a number of reasons and that those issues have not been addressed.
According to them, the FDNY is anticipated to revisit the property on Sunday and impose the vacate order.
Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella expressed his disappointment in the lack of attention towards assisting recent immigrants, regardless of their arrival timeframe. He emphasized the importance of the city taking appropriate measures and shutting down the situation.
City Hall stated its dedication to ensuring the safety of asylum seekers at emergency centers, emphasizing the inclusion of FDNY in all fire protection measures during asylum seeker operations.
