The online betting industry has made its way into Massachusetts, and along with it comes the presence of sportsbook advertising during sports broadcasts. Although the industry has been live for less than a week, fans watching Boston Bruins and Boston Celtics games have already been exposed to a multitude of sports betting advertisements.
Earlier this week, I personally watched a Celtics game to gain first-hand experience and found nine wagering ads .
On Thursday night, I decided to look at a Bruins game to have that experience too.
Now that Ma sports betting is a reality in Massachusetts, let’s take a look at how Bruins broadcasts incorporate sportsbook advertising. Based on my observation of the Bruins vs. Jets game on Thursday, I noted the presence of sportsbook advertising during the broadcast.
In total, I counted five sportsbook commercials during the game.

Bruins video games in Ma are broadcast on the Fresh England Activities Network ( NESN ).
In this certain broadcast, sportsbook ads have been present in a couple of main techniques: commercials and even virtual advertising on the panels.
Commercials
During the Bruins game, there were indeed commercials from FanDuel, DraftKings, and BetMGM, each promoting their sportsbook offerings in Massachusetts.
FanDuel Ma took the lead with three ads. The first commercial aired during the first media timeout of the game and featured various celebrities such as Kay Adams, Boomer Esiason, Charles Barkley, Joe Spieth, and Rob Gronkowski endorsing the FanDuel MA mobile app. The same commercial was shown later in the second period. Another FanDuel commercial in the first period relied solely on on-screen text and a narrator.
DraftKings Massachusetts aired a single commercial during the first period. While the game was focused on hockey, the ad itself was centered around March Madness and featured J.J. Redick playing basketball. Like FanDuel’s commercials, it was also a 30-second spot.
The final sportsbook commercial shown during the broadcast was from BetMGM Massachusetts. It aired late in the second period and featured Jalen Rose discussing BetMGM’s deposit bonus in Massachusetts, which offers up to $1,000 in bonus bets.
Interestingly, no sportsbook commercials were shown during the third period of the game.
Sportsbook ads about boards
A unique aspect of the NHL game viewing experience is the introduction of virtual advertising on the boards. This concept was newly implemented in the 2022-23 NHL season.
Virtual board ads allow each local network to display advertisements relevant to their home audiences. In this particular game played at the Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg, NESN (New England Sports Network) was able to showcase local Massachusetts ads through virtual advertising, even though the game was taking place in Winnipeg.
During the game, virtual boards displayed logos from FanDuel, DraftKings and Betway. Among these sportsbooks, FanDuel received the most airtime.
The DraftKings and Betway logos consistently appeared in the same spots whenever they were shown, while the FanDuel logo appeared in multiple locations. It was most prominently displayed in prominent spots throughout the entire second period, attracting attention to their betting offerings.
Betway Ma had considerable air movement on the online boards even without being living on the Earth. The Betway MA software will be unveiled in Jan 2024 .
Lack of in-game ui betting probabilities
One thing I noticed during the game was the absence of live betting odds graphics popping up. In contrast, earlier this week, when I watched the Celtics vs. Rockets game on NBC Sports Birkenstock boston DraftKings graphics were displayed multiple times throughout the game. These graphics focused on bets for the game and featured live updated odds.
Additionally, it’s interesting to note that the Celtics broadcast featured nine sportsbook commercials, while the Bruins broadcast had only five.

Six sportsbook apps now live in Massachusetts, including DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, WynnBET, FanDuel and Barstool Sportsbook. These platforms provide various options for betting on NHL games, allowing Bruins fans to wager on their team from the convenience of their own homes.
Indeed, this has been happening as Massachusetts residents now have access to these sportsbook apps to place bets on NHL games and support their beloved Bruins. Through the opening end of the week of MUM online wagering, the Bruins were typically the most bet-on team about DraftKings Ma.
More apps are on the way to Massachusetts. Betr is planning to go live in April, while Bally Bet and Fanatics Sportsbook are set to launch in May. Betway is expected to launch in January 2024.
With these additional apps, Massachusetts will have a potential total of up to 15 online betting apps available for residents to choose from, expanding the options for sports betting in the state.
